A Participant’s Perspective
From the outside, Community Central drop-in centre looks like any other building; brown brick with a ramp up to the large double doors. But as I walk through those doors I am transported to another world, a world that most Hobart residents are completely unaware of. Inside is a sanctuary for those like me who suffer from mental health issues, drug and alcohol issues or are homeless and lonely.
- Day Service the drop-in service at Community Central is available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10.00am to 2.00pm. A low cost lunch is available four days a week and a hot lunch and dessert is available on Thursday. Community Central has table tennis or eight ball available for anyone who wants to play. There is also a computer and a television on site.
Community Central maintains a friendly and understanding atmosphere for anyone who is homeless or isolated as a result of extreme poverty to get help or to have someone to talk to.
- Night Service Community Central’s night service operates Monday and Thursday evenings from 6.15pm to 9.15 pm. The night service offers a hot meal in a dining room environment two nights a week to people who are homeless or isolated due to extreme poverty. A Colony 47 Outreach Support Service (COSS) worker is available to help people overcome their housing issues. As the only service of its type in the CBD, the night program sees a significant number of people requiring its services.
- Centrelink Community Officer a Community Officer from Centrelink visits Community Central twice a week. The officer assists people with any questions about their benefits and advises them on entitlements such as concessions for health care cards and electricity. Community Central provides disadvantaged Tasmanians with an informal relaxed atmosphere to discuss any problems they might have.
- Mental Health Nurse a Mental Health Nurse from the Peacock Centre visits once a week, providing people with informal advice and information on a wide range of health-related issues including medications and health problems such as diabetes. The nurse can also provide referrals to other medical services.
- Active in Recovery the Active In Recovery group (A.I.R.) operates from Community Central on Thursday of each week. The group offers a range of activities to people including art, craft, screen-printing and gardening.
Funded by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) through Mental Health Services and Community Participation programs.
